This first installment of the AmSTaR series explores recent developments in Evangelical Christianity in the Netherlands. Dutch Evangelicalism can be understood as rooted in the Reformation, Pietism and other renewal movements. This collection of articles by a number of experts in the field reflects on the boundaries and intersections of the Evangelical tradition in the Netherlands, with a special focus on the themes of transition and fusion. In new cultural and societal circumstances, Dutch Evangelicalism is rapidly changing from a minority group of dissenters to a more established and respected movement within Protestantism and Dutch society. This raises a number of questions about identity, core values, practices and beliefs. The contributors to this volume explore these issues from historical, practical-theological, political, biblical-theological and hermeneutical perspectives in an attempt to understand the role and significance of Evangelical faith in the twenty-first century.

Op donderdag 8 december j.l. nam Ronald Giphart het eerste exemplaar van De wake in ontvangst. Dat is de titel van het kerstgeschenk dat hij speciaal schreef voor de VU en dat alleen binnen de VU-community wordt verspreid (het komt dus niet in de handel).
De wake vertelt de geschiedenis van een hoogleraar van de VU die door een noodlottig ongeval om het leven komt. Vrienden uit zijn studententijd besluiten een vroegere belofte gestand te doen: komt één uit hun midden te overlijden, dan houden de anderen een wake. Dat gebeurt in dit licht surrealistische verhaal dat zich afspeelt op de bovenste verdieping van het VU-hoofdgebouw.
De wake is geproduceerd en uitgegeven door de VU University Press.

Post-Christian Amsterdam is a place where life seems to be good without God, where Jesus is seen as a figure of a distant past, and where only a few people still go to church. However, it is also a context from which a deeply reflected invitation springs to face and overcome the plausibility crisis of Christianity. By telling the story of the Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck (1854-1921) and his struggle to remain standing as a Christian over against the modern worldview of his day, this study offers interested readers all over the world a mirror in which to face their own struggle. Moreover, in a world explained without God and marked by evil, it extends the invitation to adopt a binocular worldview and to live with open eyes on the way to the living God, even if this implies dying with Christ.

De naam Groen van Prinsterer is een ieder bekend, al was het maar omdat in elke plaats wel een straat naar hem vernoemd is. Maar hij is ook verrassend actueel. Na als nu was het Europa van rond 1850 een roerig en soms angstopwekkend begrip in de Nederlandse politiek. Er waarde een revolutionaire sfeer door Europa. Groen was een typische anti-revolutionair, en bovendien conservatief. Dat maakt het des te bewonderenswaardiger dat hij over zijn angsten heen Europa als leidend en richtinggevend motief in zijn politieke denkbeelden plaatste. Jelle Bijl toont in dit boek haarfijn aan dat het gedachtegoed van Groen van Prinsterer ook in de huidige tijd zeer waardevol is.
